iPad makes muted entry into Malaysia

The iPhone 4 arrived with a big bang in Malaysia in September. A huge launch party and extensive media coverage ensured that most Malaysians knew that Apple’s latest device had come. It is surprising then to see the iPad make a silent entry into Malaysia. There were only the announcement of a dedicated iPad data plan from Maxis and the iPad pricing details from authorized Apple resellers.

The iPad will not be available from telcos. They will be sold at authorized Apple resellers. Interestingly, the announced prices are quite attractive - lower than in Singapore.

Pricing is as follows:
iPad with Wi-Fi
16GB – RM1549
32GB – RM1849
64GB – RM2149

iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G
16GB – RM1999
32GB – RM2299
64GB – RM2599

Maxis has also announced its iPad data plans. The plans will be without any contract, so iPad owners can activate or cancel a plan at any time.
There are 3 plans from Maxis: – Entry (3.5 GB) RM70, Super (6 GB) RM90 and Premium (15 GB) RM200 monthly. There is an RM10 rebate for current iData or iValue subscribers. Users who cross their quotas can buy 500 Mb at either RM8 for one day validity or RM18 for 30 days validity. Or they could get 1GB for RM28 with 30 days validity.
There is also a RM70 per month prepaid option which will allow 3.5GB to the user. Topups for prepaid users range from RM8 for 500 MB with one day validity to 15GB for RM200 with 30 days validity.
